Fiber Artist Visits Monarch Gallery On Tuesday, September 25, a special group of guests visited Monarch Gallery, 158 W. Wheeling St. in Lancaster. They were from Kensington Place, the independent living section of Lutheran Village in Columbus. While visiting the gallery they were treated to a demonstration of hand spinning by Donnely K. Barber. Ms. Barber began by passing around samples of various fibers such as llama, alpaca, cashmere, bamboo, and others. The she began to spin on a beautiful wooden spinning wheel called a castle wheel, a type of wheel first developed in the 15th century. While spinning she explained such things as the gathering of cashmere, which comes from goats that are combed to collect loose fibers, not shorn like sheep. A cashmere goat will shed only about ˝ pound of fiber per year. So it can take quite a while to collect even 1 pound of cashmere fiber. She also explained that 1 pound of fiber, regardless of type, when spun very thin can make up to 20 miles of yarn. These and many other interesting facts were part of her discussion while she was spinning. The visitors from Columbus were then given time to browse in the art gallery before reboarding their bus for a tour of other sights in historic downtown Lancaster, Ohio. Monarch Gallery, an artists' cooperative gallery featuring original art, cards, jewelry, and gifts from local artists, is open Tuesday-Saturday from 11-4. For further information about the gallery or its classes and programs contact them at (740) 681=2787, or at www.monarchgallery.org. Monarch Gallery Banner: A new
banner has been ordered. The weight was taken out of the old one, but it
did not prevent the damage from happening, thus the need for a new
banner. Also we are considering if we need to revise the banner lights
or not. |
